Alright, I'm pretty new to knife making so I hope this isn't a completely ridiculous question. I have seen people making knives from files, lawn mower blades, spring steel, saw blades etc. I've got a ton of snap-on crescent wrenches and I was wondering if the steel used for that would be suitable for making a knife. I imagines it would be but I'm no expert.

    Anyone got any input?

Just guessing...but, I suspect, the high levels of alloyed elements would make forging difficult for most amateurs.

Can't imagine using stock removal, effectively.

    But, then, I am not a knife-maker.

I was hoping for some more, definitive, info...no idea how good my input was. Just trying to get the ball rolling.

Well thanks for the try. I actually found some excellent material today. It's a giant concrete saw blade. This thing is about 3 feet across and about 1/4 thick... no joke!

Any idea what the steel is?
It is possible that, with a big blade like that, that the main part is something fairly soft and the edge is something else.
just thinking with my keyboard, though.

I don't really have a for sure way to tell but as far as my little experience can tell it's pretty hard. I had a pretty hard time cutting out a chunk with the cutting wheel then using the torch it didn't cut like regular mild steel. I attemtpted annealing it last night so I will see what lies ahead as far as shaping and the rest.
