Hey, I am in the market for a good quality scandi knife for general bushcraft tasks. I want it to have a 3.5" to 4" blade and nice traditional handle of wood or bone/antler mix, also a good quality leather sheath would be great too. I have my eye on the Helle Harding, Helle Symfoni, Helle Fjellkniven and the Kellam Wolverine.

Between Helle and Kellam which knife is better quality and durability wise? Any other reccomendations for under $100. Thanks

You can't go wrong with Helle. I'd go with one with laminated steel blade. I also really like Ahti puukko (he makes some of those sold by Kellam), also check out Woodsknife (Harri Merimaa) and Jarvenpaa; Wood Jewel also makes some nice puukko. Be sure to look at the Roselli Carpenter. Here's some links:

(good prices and selection even with shipping from Finland)

Im just looking at the Ahti knives and they do resemble the Kellam's very much. I am wondering which Ahti knife is the most simular to the Kellam Wolverine?

Is the Kellam Wolvering considered a Puukko also? Am I right in saying the only difference between the Kellam Wolverine and the Kellam Puuko is the SPT blade steel and a slightly different grip?

I would go with the Ahti Metsa. I have several Ahti knives, including the Metsa and Juhla among others. I'm pretty sure Reino Kampilla (Ahti brand) makes that line for Kellam. I think maybe the Vaara is closest in handle style to the Kellam Wolverine. Now days all those are considered "puukko" in common usage even though it may be a bit of a stretch :-) I think the only difference in the two Kellam you mentioned is the handle and SPT blade. While I like the SPT blades very much (have made several with them), I don't think it is a significant difference in performance between the SPT and the standard Lauri blade (all that Kellam line and the Ahti's have Lauri blades).

Be sure to check out Lamnia's line of Ahti knives. They have the largest selection of styles. As I said before, they give good service, prompt delivery and a variety of ways to pay (credit card, paypal, etc). Also be sure you are looking at the price in US dollars and not in Euro (unless you are in Europe).

Rich has you well covered already

I have a Kellam Wolverine and a Fang and like both of those a lot. As stated though its hard to go wrong with a Helle too. I have a couple of those as well.

Thank you very much for your response guys! I just ordered a Kellam Puukko from discount cutlery in Michigan for $69.00, one of the few dealers that still ship to Canada.

I chose this model over the wolverine and 2 Ahti knives because of the handle. I like how it remains the same thickness all the way out to the end, it doesn't have any cutouts or flared pommel which would annoy my larger hands. I owned a Helle Eggen for a few months and loved the handle, but didnt like the finger guard and blade shape.

This is really my first good scandi and my first carbon steel blade so the regular steel over the SPT seemed good enough to learn to sharpen on.

Anybody have any good stories or reviews on the Kellam Puukko? Thanks again

I suspect you'll be happy with the choice.

My Wolverine was my first "real" Scandi knife. I had Moras up to that point but the Wolvrine was my first really decent Scandi. It really sold me on the style and I've been hooked ever since.

What's the URL for discount cutlery in Michigan? Can't find them using discount cutlery.
    Thanks.

I'm sure you'll like the puukko. Lauri blades by most any maker are good knives. It's just a matter of style, workmanship in assembly and price.

I bought the tracker from kellam wolfpack line... it is the most beautiful knife I own... i would get the slasher for bushcrafting... i paid 89 or so for my tracker on the bay; i think i found the slasher for about the same after a google search... buy any of their products... i use ontario for bushcrafting; my kellam's may just be for collecting; would like to have the entire line... i can't bring my self to baton with such a work of art.
