I've heard of folders with small double guards built into the bolster referred to as bowtie knives...don't know if that is what he's after.

that must be it, thank you! I saw a picture of what looked like a small version of a bowie knife that was an automatic folding knife. It was called a bowtie knife. regards,

"Bowtie" usually refers to the shape of the "shield" on the handle of a pocket knife.

A fishtail is a slip joint that is also called a bow tie.



Though I never heard bowtie for it before.

An auto that looks like that, I agree with Gary, it's probably called a stiletto.
