What is the odd design of this knife for? I just picked up a cheap cold steel model, I figured that would be a good way to decide if I like the design before I buy a higher end one. But im sort of clueless as to what this knife excels at, or should I say the purpose of it.
The shape is a general purpose knife with a heavier leaning toward skinning and slicing.
NOW.... while the shape of the CS thing you bought may be the same as the other elliptical knives, shape has very little to do with knife performance.
What CS is going to be lacking is in heat treat, geometry of the edge and refinement of the handle to blade relationship.
Essentially what you did was to buy a moped to see what it would be like to ride a motorcycle; both are tow wheeled vehicles powered by a gasoline engine but that's where the similarity ends.
Your line of thinking will certainly cost you money in the long run; good knives do a good job of holding their value, some even appreciate over time.
Cheap knives make money for the people selling them and drop like a rock in value when you want to get rid of them.
But the knife you think you're going to want and use it, you'll be money and experience ahead.
That being said, you shouldint buy a brand new supersport as your first bike. I don't see why I should have bought a $200 Canadian special if after a few days I would dislike the overall blade geometry. Better waste 15$ on a cheaper moped and decide that I don't like the shape of the blade.
And it did let me know I'd like to get the Grohmann "original" version.
I'd like it in high-carbon, flat-ground.
The elliptical blade is to let you choke up on the blade with a pinch grip. The blade-to-handle format is for blade contact and knuckle clearance on a cutting board.
Sharpshooter is right about the CS's shortcomings in blade steel, grind, and general refinement. But I also think using it as a test drive of the Canadian pattern is a fine idea.
Rightyo, Trust me, i'm not a big fan of CS for anything other than machetes. If I decide that I like the over all idea of the knife, I plan to buy a barkie off KSF. I've already got the knife picked out actually hehe. I know the Canadian Special is different, but the concept is the same.
The original purpose of this topic was not to compare the blades. It was for me to find out the general use behind the blade.
I have the carbon steel grohman number 4 and the Canadian special from Bark river, they are both good knives and both ergonomic , they will skin ,slice notch, peel fillit and disjoint any game animal. As Mike said above there is nothing you cant do with one of them.
That said I like the Bark river by far the best and it has the best edge geomitry, I like it enough to have two of them, one osage orange and one sheephorn!!
