I have seen a few solingen sheriffs knives around the place for sale on eBay and local swap meets. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on these knives for me. I think they were made in the 1960's? Were they commercial or issued to any force (i.e- police)? They look really nice with the etched "Sheriffs knife" on the blade. Thanks

    you mean these?

Personally I don't think too much of them but I can see how they would ring the bell for some people

AFAIK they were mass produced to cater for the budget USA buyer - I'm sure someone with more knowledge on these things will give more details - as always I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Yeah, thats the one. Thanks Antonio. They just look really nice, but I will take your word for it as you seem to know your stuff from previous threads I have seen from you. I think it best to stay clear...

Thanks for your kind words but I'm not that well informed - just a legacy of an education that left me with an inquisitive mind

From memory there were a lot of "Solingen bowies" made - weak stick tangs with aluminium bolsters that came loose and nlades with soft steel that won't take or hold a decent edge - but if you can pick one up in Oz for ~$20 with the knife and sheath in good condition then why not? It'll still be better than a lot of the junk being sold today that shops are asking $60+ for.

One thing I am pretty sure about - they were never issued to real Sheriffs

If you're into bayonets as your Avatar suggests I'll PM you links to a bloke with a bayonet obsession who has a huge collection and is also quite knowledgeable about them.

    Cheers
    Antono

The one in that first pic actually looks pretty spiffy.

The second one, definitely el cheapo.
