"As they say in Italy, Italians were eating with a knife and fork when the French were still eating each other. The Medici family had to bring their Tuscan cooks up there so they could make something edible"
I made this as a gift for a lady friend of mine, she'll be spending the next year on a farm and I figured she might enjoy woodcarving in her (abundant) spare time.
This is my first knife, a small laminated carbon steel Helle blade (about 2 3/4in) with brass bolster and set in a nice piece of some Macassar Ebony. I've never really worked with the stuff before and had heard horror stories about it's brittleness, but I actually found it really easy to work with. Plus it sort of smells like chocolate. The blade still needs a good sharpening to take off the factory edge and the bolster could use a little bit of clean up. But damn did that wood turn out better than I expected. On to a birch-handled carver for myself next (I'd never use such nice wood on something for my own use).
Just two light coats of BLO and some hand polishing with 3M microabrasive cloths. The wood does naturally take a beautiful polish though, so I can't take all the credit.
