-An old cowboy tradition where the recipient of a knife, as a gift is supposed to give the giver of the knife a coin =

Does anyone appreciate the custom of giving a coin when they recieve a knife, even if it is to a wholesaler or dealer for a knife. I suppose a face to face deal would work but I cant go sending coins to every ebay sellers. Or can I? Will I have bad luck? (if you beleive that sort of thing)

    Thanks ]
    Colin

I believe this is only when you give a knife away, not when you sell it.

I have heard that it's because if you give someone a knife that means you want to hurt that person, not by will but unconsious. Therefore, if you get a coin back, you haven't actually given it away, but sold it even if the coin is next to worthless!

the saying is "cutting presents cut friendship"

So it refers to presents. This way the present is "paid" by a small coin and not a "real" present anymore, but a "deal"

In my experience this doesn´t refer to hunters.

Occasionally I have given selfmades to very good hunting friends. surely, the barter trade might have been prior invitations for some hunts. But usually these cutting presents have stablilized friendship even more!

Maybe because hunting folks usually are knifenuts

That tradition is part of the scandinavian folklore as well.

One way of "cheating" is to add a coin with the knife so the person recieving it has a coin to give back.

    I always do that.
One other thing is that a knife is not really yours until it has bitten you.

That should be standard equipment for each FK sold

I just emptied a 40-pack of band aids, not many were used for other reasons than my knives

We have the same supersticious custom here in Holland. But nevertheless I always give a coin in return for any knife I get as a present. I just don't want to break up any good friendships.
